Iíve tried using newspapers and Windex, (rubber gloves were required to prevent getting ink on all over my hands) a professional cleaning tool with a sponge scrubber and squeegee, and non-lint cleaning cloths. No matter what Iíve tried, it has been a long, tedious process that always ended in clean windows with streaks left behind.... 20/09/2018†∑ One of the tricks I learned along the way was to use a coffee filter to apply the tru oil, very thin coats, but it leaves a totally streak free finish. Definitely use coffee filters to apply the finish.

Wipe this off, and you've got... FWIW, Tru Oil isn't really a true oil finish: it's a wiping varnish that just happens to have a linseed oil base. It has more in common with wipe-on polyurethane than it does an actual oil finish (like pure tung or linseed oils, etc.) TO is good stuff and one of my personal favorite finishes, but the name is a bit ironic.

19/01/2015†∑ Tru-oil will dry in a few days but takes up to a few months to totally cure. Im in Michigan where we all have the heat on and that will speed up the curing process, I find it totally cured in about 3 to 4 weeks in the winter. When cured I give the oil a final sanding then apply a satin poly top coat. Buffing the oil to a high gloss is a bugger.

- To prevent excessive waste I try to apply the minimum amount to begin with*. That said, sanding the surface afterwards IS a well-established way of perfecting the surface of dried finish, to make it dead flat and also to achieve a specific sheen (i.e. going from high gloss to any level of reduced sheen).
